Public Student Loan Forgiveness

What is Public Student Loan Forgiveness?

The PSLF Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

Determine if you qualify by visiting the Federal Student Aid website.

Why and When to Submit the PSLF Form?

To help you track your progress toward qualifying for PSLF, we recommend that you submit the PSLF form annually or when you change employers. It will make it much easier once you are ready to apply for forgiveness after 10 years of employment in public service!

Submitting the form annually will let us track and verify how many qualifying payments you make while working full-time for a qualifying employer, among other PSLF eligibility requirements.

If you do not submit the PSLF form with your employment certification annually, then at the time you apply for forgiveness, you will be required to submit employment certification for each employer you worked for while making the required 120 qualifying monthly payments.

How do I complete the employer section of the PSLF process?

  1. FedLoan Servicing recommends that you initiate your PSLF application at studentaid.gov
  2. Complete page 1 of the application WITHOUT including your Social Security Number. For security purposes, please include your University ID instead to properly identify you in the system. Payroll will update that field to reflect your Social Security Number.
  3. Send the form to payroll@iu.edu and be sure to include your full legal name and University ID, and note that your home campus is IU Columbus.
  4. Since this document contains critical information, upon completion you will receive an email notification from Slashtmp IU including a password protected link to retrieve the completed form. Another email will follow including the password required to obtain the secure document.

Please Note: Please allow five working days for IU Indianapolis Payroll to complete processing.

What do I do once IU Indianapolis Payroll returns the completed form?

Once the employer portion of the PSLF form is completed and returned (Above Steps 1-4), you can send it to FedLoan Servicing* or via mail or fax as listed below.

You may mail the form to this address:

U.S. Department of Education
FedLoan Servicing
P.O. Box 69184
Harrisburg, PA 17106-9184

You may also fax your PSLF form to 717-720-1628.

If FedLoan Servicing is already your servicer, you may upload your PSLF form on FedLoan Servicing's website.

*FedLoan Servicing, one of the federal loan servicers, administers the PSLF Program on our behalf.

Please be aware that the U.S Department of Education will reject forms sent without a physical (wet) signature!
